Things to keep in mind while planning wooden décor

Everyone loves the warm rich look of wooden interiors despite the fear of a termite infestation. The unmatched timeless and elegant quality of wood can set one's home apart. Besides the popular wooden flooring and wooden panels on the walls, the latest trend to catch on now is wooden pillars. Ramesh Patel, director of the company that supplies wood even to the top celebrity houses in the city, lists the various wooden décor options along with the do's and don'ts of using wood.

Veneer: The best materials for wood panels, veneers can be used with glass or even leather, which form the skin for the base of plywood. Price range: Rs 25-Rs 750 per sft.

Wooden highlighters: As the name suggests, high lighters are used to enhance the beauty of a particular place and are usually made from the roots of trees. It is available in around 15 varieties in the 4 ft + 2 ft size. Price range: Rs 3,000-Rs 5,000.

Forester: These are logs of trees that are used for panelling. Foresters are cut into various sizes ranging from 2 inches to 6 inches. Price range: Rs 6,000 for 4 ft + 2 ft.

Gems: The latest choice in the market today is gems wood for panelling and is available in 85 varieties. Price range: Rs 1,150-Rs 1,280 per piece.

DOS

  • For panelling, use Gurjan based plywood which is termite proof.
  • Walls should be borer and termite treated.
  • The back of the plywood should also be chemically treated.

DON'TS

  • Don't use ordinary plywood while laying out your wooden flooring.
  • Make sure that there are no gaps and the flooring is tightly packed, as any water seepage could result in a bulge.
  • Don't forget to use a layer of foam underneath the flooring, as it protects the wood
