Tomy’s pictorial bio release soon
1st Indian who sailed around world solo tells his story.
Kochi: Lieutenant commander Abhilash Tomy is set to bring out a pictorial biography that depicts his solo, non-stop circumnavigation, the first Indian and the second Asian to accomplish the feat. The 168-page book titled ‘151’, which he co-authored with Social Access Communication founder Lynn De Souza, will be released on December 17 in New Delhi.
“It’s a photo-feature depicting the story of his 151 days of solitude at sea…He was willing to risk life and limb to undertake the solo voyage around the globe… His love for the boat was so deep that he sailed her around the world and brought her back without a scratch. We have also included comments from fans in the social media in the book,” said Lynn.
Tomy had set sail out of Mumbai on November 1 last year in the sail boat INSV Mhadei and had to battle waves as huge as 10metres and wind speeds of more than 100kmph.
The journey was completed on March 31 this year. President Pranab Mukherjee in his forward to the book said. “I’m happy to learn that a pictorial book is being brought out to commemorate the successful completion of the Indian Navy expedition ‘Sagar Parikrama’.”
While at sea, Tomy’s activities included boat-related work, cooking, reading books, and communicating through e-mails with friends and colleagues. He began his day with meditation.
“I used to begin my day in the yacht with meditation. I used to check the weather report regularly and prepare myself for the worst. I would sleep for half-an-hour, wake up, read, check the boat and take a nap again,” he said. Orders for the book can be placed at 151thebook@gmail.com
