Chennai: Nine-month-old conjoined twins from Tanzania have been successfully separated at about 9.00 pm, Mon­day and are said to be stable.

A team of 20 doctors at Apollo Specialty Hos­pi­tal, Vanagaram separated the pygopagus (joined at the buttocks) male babies after 12-hour long multi-discipline procedure. 

The medical fraternity that viewed the surgery live on the Internet, staff and doctors of Apollo Hospitals, applauded the team of doctors who performed the delicate surgery.

After separating babies, pediatric anesthetics took each baby to a separate operation table for reconstruction surgery that went on till mid- night.

The twins Ericana and Eluidi who are fondly called ‘ammukutty’ and 'chellakutty' were wheeled into the operation theatre at 7 am.

According to doctors at Apollo hospitals, the surgery was delayed by an hour as one of the babies had fever.
