‘Metro to Tripunithura in phase-1’

The Kochi Metro could be expanded upto Angamaly through the Cochin International Airport.

Kochi: The Kochi Metro could be expanded upto Angamaly through the Cochin International Airport, and from Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Kaloor to Kakkanad as well as to West Kochi, the preliminary report filed by RITES to the Kochi Metri Rail Ltd on Tuesday night said.

“The report has identified the route to Tripunithura from Pettah through S N junction along the Kochi- Dhanushkodi highway. This reach up to S.N. Junction can be executed at an approximate cost of Rs 200 crore and can be done in the first phase itself,” KMRL MD Elias George said the findings of the preliminary report.Extension subsequently from SN junction to other parts of Tripunithura could also fall in the second phase of the project. 

In support of the need for extending the Metro, George said that the RITES study has found that the proportion of city dwellers using public transport, especially buses have come down drastically in last 12 years.
