Nellore: Mystery shrouds the theft of a computer containing valuable data pertaining to land records and other files from the Mandal Revenue Office at Balayapalle of Gudur division in the early hours on Wednesday. The computer was being used by tahsildar Poornachandra Rao.

Interestingly, the goons have left the three other computers untouched giving enough room for suspicion over the motive behind the theft. There are scores of land disputes and crimes related to it in Balayapalle area.

The miscreants gained entry into the office after breaking the main door open. They opened the locks of rooms of tahsildar, assistant statistical officer and computer.

Several documents and files were found strewn around in the ASO’s room and officials are not sure whether any documents were taken away.

This is second time such incident taking place in Gudur division. Some persons stole a Laptop, LCD TV and HD camera used for video conference besides a central processing unit (CPU) and a monitor from the sub collector’s office on May 29, 2013.

Ironically, the office is located very close to the rural police station in Gudur town.

However, the tahsildar and revenue officials denied the reports that the computer had information related to land records.

The computer reportedly had precious data pertaining to government lands in Chillakur mandal which are subjected to encroachments.

However, the tahsildar and revenue officials denied the reports that the computer had information related to land records.

In fact, the Anti-Corruption Bureau was also probing into the land encroachments and compensation paid to ineligible persons in Chillakur mandal then.

Interacting with the media, he said that he was using the computer for checking mails and apply his digital signature in the applications forwarded to him from MeeSeva centres.

Venkatagiri circle inspector Srinivasa Reddy said that they are suspecting the role of some insiders and locals behind the incident as the burglars targeted tahsildar system alone.

Meanwhile, district collector K. Srikant had not ruled out the possibility of some important data available in the stolen computer.

He said that he is ordering a probe into the incident.
