Bangalore: If this system works, India can kiss power blackouts goodbye!

The Union ministry of power and the Planning Commission have agreed to introduce a unique system recommended by the Prime Minister’s Science Advisory Council which guarantees power supply to millions of homes even when sufficient electricity is not available in the grid.

Aptly called “uninterrupted direct current” or UDC the system ensures supply of electricity for lights, fans, and even television sets and cell phone chargers, 24x7 and through the year.

“We will be the first country to introduce this system because others do not have power blackouts or break in supply as frequently as we do. It almost costs nothing,” Prof. C.N.R Rao, chairman of the advisory council, told Deccan Chronicle.

Designed by Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala, a member of the advisory council, and his team at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Chennai, the UDC system would be tested in several states including Tamil Nadu as a proof-of-concept, shortly.

IIT, Chennai, and state electricity boards would demonstrate the feasibility, viability and benefits of the project.

Prof Rao said Union minister for power Jyotiraditya Scindia has written to him, confirming its introduction.
