Actor-producer John Abraham has recently added a new feather to his cap. Carrying forward his love for sports, John is now a co-owner and brand ambassador of the Delhi Waveriders team in Hockey India League.

“My vision is to see hockey, our national sport, in the forefront. I closely follow the sport. I am a big fan of Sardar Singh, the Indian hockey captain and the star of the Delhi team. He gives me a complex when it comes to fitness levels. I wish to endorse the sport not just on paper but would like to train with these players,” said John.

The actor expressed his desire to explore the new genre of sports films. He is planning to make films on hockey, football, motorcycling and boxing among other sports. “I would like to bring the spotlight on sports films — a genre that still remains elusive to filmmakers. Of late, biopics have become a preferred route for those wishing to make sports films, as they believe this adds human drama to the plot. Shoojit Sircar and I are making a film on sports, which is not a biopic on any sports personality but based on a true story of a player,” he shared.

There are other areas of sports as well that the actor wants to explore through films, but hockey is certainly something that remains John’s favourite sport. “I am well aware of the life histories, struggles and hardships that stars like the legendary Major Dhyan Chand, Ajit Pal Singh (former captain of the Indian Hockey team) and Sardar Singh among others have faced. Presenting their life stories on celluloid would be an enriching experience. I would like my other buddies from the film industry to take up such films,” he added.

John is hopeful that there is an audience that wants to watch these kind of real-life inspired films and are keen on qualitative cinema.

The actor-producer is busy shooting 'Welcome Back' and 'Dostana 2' and is looking forward to begin his third production, tentatively titled Hamara Bajaj. “We are rigorously shooting for Welcome Back that also stars Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Shruti Hassan. Directed by Anees Bazmee, the film is being mainly shot in Dubai,” shared John.
