Karunakaran name for Kochi airport: Oommen Chandy

Oommen Chandy has said that the state government was considering naming.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Oommen Chandy has said that the state government was considering naming the CIAL airport at Nedumbassery after former chief minister K. Karunakaran.

He  was speaking at a function at the Senate Hall here on Friday when President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee unveiled the statue of the late K. Karunakaran.

Chandy said that some procedures had to be completed to name the airport after the late chief minister who was instrumental in building it, the first such project on the Public- Private Participation  mode.

Chandy also announced that the proposal submitted by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala on starting a research centre named after the late leader in Thiruvananthapuram was under  the government’s  study.

Earlier, the President said that Karunakaran had a prominent role in turning Kerala into a modern state in terms of socio-economic indicators. Good administrators are seldom popular leaders.  However, Karunakaran was both a popular leader and a good administrator, he  said.

The statue coming on the road near the Kanakakkunnu Palace is 12.5 feet tall. Earlier, the Governor, the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues extended a warm welcome to the President on his arrival.
