Alappuzha light house under QR code
As part of project ‘Alappuzhapedia’ by wikipedians.
Alappuzha: The Alappuzha lighthouse, one of the oldest on the south-west coast of the country, will soon have a unique distinction. For the first time in India, all information on it will be digitised under ‘Quick Response (QR) Code.’
The initiative has been taken by Wikipedans under a project named Alappuzhapedia so that netizens can access the information fast. QR Pedia project, which was successfully experimented in several other countries, will be launched on Sunday by Dr Thomas Isaac MLA as part of Wikisangamotsavam being held here.
T.K. Sujith, general convener of Wikisangamotsavam, said the project aimed at uploading information on places which have visual possibility. When the pictures are uploaded, Alappuzha will be the first city in the country to be digitized under the QR code. The code can be activated by using mobile phones which support QR Code Reader as well, he said.
QR Pedia, which was first introduced in London in 2011, is the process of making QR codes by using the URL of Wikipedia sites. By next year, Wikipedians will create QR codes of all historical institutions and places having visual advantage in Alappuzha. “The digitisation of Alappuzha with QR codes will help both research scholars and tourists,” he said.
The two-day Wikisangamotsavam started at Radha convention centre on Saturday. A session for Wikistudents was inaugurated by child actor Master Minon while Dr Fahad Jaleel inaugurated a session for differently abled.
