Hyderabad: Over Rs 50 lakh worth materials, including wooden doors, windows, tiles, iron grills, electrical and bathroom fittings have been stolen from newly constructed apartments in the city and its outskirts.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation spent over Rs 200 crore to construct 9,000 housing units, under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission housing scheme, at various places in the city.

Due to the failure of GHMC to provide security to JNNURM housing colonies and lethargy of the Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district collectorates, 9,000 JNNURM flats, completed in all aspects, are waiting for the beneficiaries to be occupied.

However, the government has not identified the beneficiaries as a result of which these fully-completed 9,000 flats are lying vacant.

Though contractors have been insisting on GHMC to take possession of the flats, the civic body has not taken them and also did not provide any security in these colonies. As a result, the new doors, windows, tiles, electrical and bathroom fittings etc., whatever the people could lay their hands on, have been stolen.

“Rs 49-lakh worth material has been stolen from JNNURM colony in Shamsi-guda, at Kukatpally alone. We are going to book police case also,” said GHMC engineer-in-chief, R. Dhan Singh.

He informed this to the general body meeting of the GHMC, on Saturday, after Telugu Desam floor leader raised the issue of JNNURM houses lying vacant.
