Priest held for sexual harassment in Karnataka
Raichur: The Deodurga police on Sunday arrested a priest at Shambulinga temple near Deodurga town, who was absconding for the past one-and-a-half month, on charges of sexual harassment.
The arrested has been identified as Veeresh. A case had been registered against him at the Deodurga police station on November 1 under the Information Technology Act-2008 and Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 392 (A) and 417 read with 34 of Indian Penal Code.

Superintendent of Police M.N. Nagaraj said on Monday that the arrested priest had sexually harassed four women under the guise of offering special pujas.
The priest would ask the women to take off their clothes, while performing the puja. He had also captured the nude puja rituals on his mobile phone.
A complaint had been filed by Ranappa, an eyewitness, the SP said. A team, led by Deodurga circle inspector Ramesh Methi, was constituted to nab the accused.
“Acting on a tip-off, the team arrested Veeresh from the house of his elder sister in Chiragunti village in Muktal taluk of Andhra Pradesh. Attempts are being made to arrest two more accused – Basavaraj Sindhanur and Nagaraj Kambar,” he said.

College girl alleges rape by student union leader, sets herself afire
Bhilwara (Rajasthan): Alleging that she had been raped by president of the students' union of her college, a girl set herself on fire in the district and is in a critical condition, police said on Tuesday.
The girl, an undergraduate student at a college in Bijolia town, poured kerosene and set herself on fire Monday night, CO Mandalgarh Dharmendra Yadav said. She was taken to a local hospital from where she was referred to Kota government hospital, he said, adding that her condition is critical.
The girl has alleged that she was raped by the president of the students union Ajit Singh on the pretext of marriage, Yadav said. The accused is absconding and the matter is under investigation, he said.
Meanwhile, several students protested in Mandal town and in colleges in Bhilwara, demanding arrest of the accused. "Protesting students in Mandal were dispersed and the situation is peaceful now," the police added.

Bangalore: The Davangere police, who are investigating a case of attempt to rape and murder of a 19-year-old BCA student, claimed on Saturday that the victim and the accused were in a physical relationship over the last two months.
They further said that there was no sign of coercive sex and the accused youth attacked the girl after the victim threatened that she would inform her father about their affair, the police said.
The police said the accused, Roopesh (name changed), is a minor and would turn 18 after two months. The accused was arrested by the police and put in a lockup, but was later remanded to juvenile home after his parents produced documents to prove that he was a minor, the police said.
Roopesh, a resident of Mouneshwara Layout near Nittuvalli, had allegedly tried to rape and murder the girl behind Bapuji Auditorium on Saturday night. The duo came to know each other through a common friend three months ago.
On Saturday night, Bindusri was returning home after a dance class when Roopesh came on a bike and took her near the auditorium on the pretext of dropping her home. There he allegedly tried to rape her and attempted to murder her when she resisted.
The police claimed that the medical report revealed that there were no signs of forcible sex on Saturday night. “They were in a physical relationship for the last three months. She allegedly threatened Roopesh that she would inform her father about their relationship.
Roopesh, who was against it, tried to murder her by smashing her head with a boulder. The vaginal swabs have been sent for test. We will know more details after investigations are over,” Davangere SP D. Prakash told Deccan Chronicle.

Kakinada: After battling for her life for five days, 17-year-old Keerthi Revathi, who was set ablaze by a stalker just days before her marriage, succumbed to the burns at the government hospital on Monday.
Revathi was set to marry Eswara Sharma of Pensam village in Srikakulam on Sunday at Anaparthi in East Godavari district.
Howver, she was set ablaze by M. Naveen Kumar on December 18, as she had turned down his proposal.

Hyderabad: A woman committed suicide by consuming poison in Jeedimetla on Sunday evening after being reprimanded by her husband for chewing tobacco. The victim has been identified as Aisheya Begum, 43, wife of Mahbub, a resident of Rodamestri Nagar in Quthbullapur.
According to Jeedimetla police, Aisheya was addicted to chewing tobacco for years. It was affecting her health too. Her husband Mahbub had warned her many times, and they used to have frequent arguments over the uissue.
But on Sunday evening, Aisheya consumed poison after they had an argument over the issue, police said. The family members took her to the Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals, where she was declared brought dead.
The body was later shifted to the Gandhi Hospital and was handed over to the victim’s family on Monday.

Karaikal: The police arrested on Sunday the husband of a correspondent of a private school in Thirunallar here on charges of sexually assaulting a class 9 girl who studied in the school.
The action followed an enquiry committee of the district administration which established prima facie evidence against the accused.
According to the police, S. Mahalingam (65), husband of M. Chandra, correspondent of Vinith School, Thirunallar, had sexually abused a class 9 girl.
Disturbed by the act of the man, the girl drank kerosene and underwent treatment at a community health centre in Karaikal. She subsequently obtained a transfer from the school.
An enquiry committee constituted to go into the incident had established a prima facie case of evidence against Mahalingam that he had sexually harassed and assaulted the girl with the intention of gratifying his sexual desire. He was arrested and remanded by a Karaikal court.

Chennai: A 31-year-old woman was arrested on Monday near Kancheepuram for cheating people by posing as an IAS officer. Tamil Selvi, a native of Polur, in Tiruvannamalai district was picked up from a lodge in Kancheepuram on Sunday evening.
In reality, she was only a class 10 dropout, the police said. She had posed as a bureaucrat and had promised to get jobs for youths and grabbed money from them to make a fast buck.
The con woman was arrested following a complaint from Dhanalakshmi, 18, a polytechnic student and a small-time cine artiste. Dhanalakshmi was introduced to the fake IAS officer through a mutual friend in September after she was looking to get patta for a land her mother Kalaiselvi owned.
Tamil Selvi had claimed to be an IAS probationer and that she expected to be posted as the collector of Kancheepuram from July 2014. In order to get patta for the land, she had taken Rs14,000 from the student. Later, when the girl enquired at the collectorate, she realised that she had been conned and lodged a complaint at the Chinna Kancheepuram police station.
According to police sources, the woman had previously stayed at Erode, where she had indulged in similar activities. “She had even hired a cab to travel from Erode to Kancheepuram at the expense of the people she conned,” the police said.
The con woman was produced before a magistrate court and remanded to Puzhal prison on Monday. The woman will be taken into custody and further investigations will be on, police sources said.

Tirunelveli: A woman police sub-inspector was alleged to have poured acid on the face of a woman at the Tenkasi police station in Tirunelveli district.
The complainant, Kanagalakshmi (44), wife of Nallakani of Melamasiveethi in Tenkasi, undergoing treatment at Tirunelveli medical college hospital with burn injuries on her face, told mediaperson that a woman sub-inspector at the Tenkasi police station poured acid on her face while interrogating her in a cheating case. Kanagalakshmi, however, did not name the sub-inspector.
For their part, the Tenkasi police had a different story to tell. According to them, Kanagalakshmi, one of the accused in a cheating case, brought an acid bottle along with her to the police station and poured it on her face during interrogation.
Kanagalakshmi and Nallakani are said to be involved in criminal activities and have several cases against them in the Tenkasi region.

Chennai: A 24-year-old man was hacked to death by a gang in the vicinity of his residence, near Avadi, on Sunday night. The deceased, Mukundan, resided at MGR Street in Nemelicherry and was working as a tailor at a private garment factory there, the police said.
On Monday, around 10 pm, he was standing near the Nemelicherry bus stop when a gang wielding weapons attacked him and left him to die in a pool of blood. On information, the Pattabiram police, led by inspector Sundar, reached the spot and retrieved Mukundan’s body and sent it to the Kilpauk medical college hospital for autopsy.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Mukundan’s neighbour, who used to a create ruckus in the area along with his friends, could have committed the murder over a feud. It has come to light that Mukundan had objected to the man indulging in drunken brawls in the area. Moreover, the suspects are absconding.
Special teams have been formed to nab the accused, and Pattabiram police are confident of catching them by Monday night.

Hyderabad: A cloth merchant committed suicide by jumping in front of a train at the Secunderabad railway station on Monday morning.
The victim was identified as Jithender Giriji Goshar, 45, a resident of Himayathnagar, who runs a textile store in the area. The passengers who found the body alerted the police.
The cops found a suicide note, which mentioned a name Arun Gala, as the reason for his suicide. Gala, a builder, stays in the same apartment complex as Jithender.
“There were frequent fights regarding the parking space between the two,” Jithender’s brother said. The note further said, “Vijayawada cousins take care of my family.” A case has been registered and body shifted to the Gandhi Hospital.

Hyderabad: The Central Crime Station unearthed an embezzlement case involving a whopping Rs 1.75 crore in Shriram City Union Finance’s Himayathnagar branch. So far they have arrested three officials of the company — the branch manager, Avunooru Srikanth, 30, accounts-in-charge, Mugannagari Venkata Siva Reddy, 28, and marketing executive, Venna Srikanth, 26.
The trio embezzled the large sum with fake loan applications and forged documents. The scam was unearthed after the misappropriation of funds came to light three months ago following an internal audit. Some of the firm’s officials then approached the Central Crime Station police.
According to the police, the trio started generating fake loan applications since November 2012 with forged documents of existing clients, employees and other people.
“They prepared 28 fake loan applications, and took the loan amount. They also took the incentive of lakhs of rupees from the company for acquiring the fake clients. Apart from that, they misappropriated around Rs 11.5 lakh, from the actual clients,” said Central Crime Sation DCP P. Raju.
Shriram City Union Finance assured that the case won’t affect rest of its clients. A case has been booked against the trio, and they were sent to judicial remand.

Vijayawada: A 16-year-old inmate of a hostel, which is run by a corporate college, was found hanging in her room on Monday morning. Guttikonda Vidya Chowdary, the daughter of G. Purnachandra Rao of Chillakallu village, Jagayyapeta mandal, was a first-year Intermediate student at Sri Chaitanya Junior College’s Aparanjita girl’s campus near Kanuru.
Penamaluru police inspector K. Dharmendra said, the girl went home on December 18 with her father and returned on December 22. “She might have been homesick and under stress and this might have led her to this extreme step,” Dharmendra said.
He said the girl had talked to her roommates till 12 midnight. When the went to sleep, Vidya hanged herself at around 1 am. Ramya, the floor in-charge at the hostel, found the body when
she was on a routine round to wake up students at 5am on Monday, police said.
