Kochi: With brooms in their hands, a group of residents, mainly women, marched into a Road Development Committee (RDC) Convention being convened by local political leaders in Paravur on the outskirts of the district to press for widening of the historical Thottakattukara-Kadungalloor Road.

The leaders were discussing ways to widen the road, said to have been used by the Travancore Kings to visit the Thiruvaloor Temple in the olden days, from the current seven to 15 metres. The residents, however, saw "dark hands" of the land mafia behind the move that will result in relocation of at least 20 families.

Over 30 women, all carrying brooms, participated in the protest on Monday evening. “It was a symbolic struggle by the ordinary people against the powerful like the done in Delhi. We’re just trying to bring home the point. ” Road side Residents Association Convenor Sundaram Gopal said.
