Anti-liquor crusader held in Madurai with dad, sister

Madurai: The Madurai police on Thursday arrested law student A.Nandini (21), who resumed her fast demanding prohibition in the state, her school-going sister A.Niranjana (16) and father Anandan (48) who joined her in the fast on the Vaigai riverbed.
The girl, who has been campaigning for a liquor-free Tamil Nadu since July this year, had distributed pamphlets calling for closure of Tasmac shops while riding on a two-wheeler with her father from Madurai to Chennai on December 23. Stopped from entering Chennai where she planned to go on a hunger strike, the girl had no choice but to return to Madurai.
“We were on our way to Kodanad to meet the chief minister and submit a petition to her when the police picked us up at Perundurai in Erode district and dropped us at our house in Madurai in their jeep this morning,” said the young activist.
Not to be put off, she sat on the Vaigai riverbed near the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) and began her fast in the afternoon with her sister and father, but was picked up late evening by the Mathichiyam police and admitted to the GRH for 'treatment’. “I have the people’s support. I will continue my hunger strike until the government introduces prohibition,” she declared.
