Chennai: With the post of vice chancellor remaining vacant at the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Tanuvas) for more than two months, several MoUs and research works are pending at this prestigious university known for its academic excellence in south east Asia.

Tanuvas got a boost due to the free livestock scheme and announcements made by chief minister Jayalalithaa as it provides technical support to government and now with the VC’s post remaining vacant, there is no centrifugal force in the university, explains a senior professor associated with Tanuvas, adding that be it entering into new research work or vaccine production, you need a decision maker to kickstart big projects and in the absence of a VC, such extra works of an varsity are sidelined.

“When it comes to veterinary medicine in the country, Tanuvas enjoys the status of being a centre of excellence and foreign universities often tie up with Tanuvas for exchange of curriculum and students, but since July there is no progress on this front,” rued an inside at the veterinary varsity.

However he adds that the administration work of the varsity is not affected as the registrar is running the office of the vice chancellor. “I have recently completed my arrears and when I insisted about my degree completion certificates, staff at the Madras Veterinary College are clueless. An office assistant said that the VC has to sign the degree certificates and asked me to come after Pongal for further details,” rued an outgoing veterinary graduate.

Though the search committee and other panels have completed their work, orders appointing the vice chancellors are still awaited.

VC posts in Bharathidasan University, Tiruchy and Periyar University, Salem, are also lying vacant. Registrars of universities are now holding additional charge of the posts of vice-chancellor, informed sources said.
