Nellore: The BJP leaders have demanded that the government scrap G.O. No. 14 for supply of water to Chittoor from Kandaleru dam during a protest before the head regulator of the dam near Rapur on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, BJP district unit president P. Surendra Reddy has questioned the rationale behind diversion of water to Chittoor when there was hardly any assured allotment for Kandaleru.

He demanded that the government ensure water supply to entire ayacut under Telugu Ganga branch canals by completing pending works.

Surendra Reddy appealed to the government to earmark 20 tmc ft from Srisailam to Somasila to address the needs of SPSR Nellore district. He also urged the state to take up the suspended works of Somasila-Swarnamukhi link canal.

Referring to 2.75 lakh acre depending on water from Kandaleru, he expressed surprise over the scheme to draw water for Chittoor and demanded that the finance minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy react on the issue.

Stressing that one tmc ft is enough to address the water needs of Chittoor, he expressed surprise over the plan to draw 6 tmc ft from Kandaleru.

BJP state spokesman K. Anjaneya Reddy alleged that Nellore district will turn as desert if water is transferred to Chittoor and industries.

BJP state executive body members Midatala Ramesh and Vijayalakshmi were also present among others during the protest.
