IIT Kanpur student found dead 

Kanpur: The body of a student of IIT Kanpur was found on railway tracks near the campus area here, police said on Thursday.

The body of G Sai Kumar Reddy (20), a resident of Prakasham district in Andhra Pradesh, was found along the Kanpur-Farrukhabad railway line yesterday morning, a police officer said. A probe is being conducted to ascertain whether it was a case of suicide or accident, the officer said.

As per the post-mortem report, the body was hit by a heavy object, due to which it is assumed that he might have been hit by the train accidentally, the officer said.

Reddy was a second year B Tech student pursuing Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering in the institute, student welfare Dean, IIT-Kanpur, Prof A K Ghosh said. Ruling out reports that he was depressed and may have committed suicide, Ghosh said he was an average student and was never involved in any conflicts with other students.

"We are investigating it. A four-member body has been formed by the institute, to look into the matter. It will submit a report within 7 days," he said. Parents of Reddy arrived at the institute today morning and have asked for the body of their son to perform the last rites at their native place, the police officer said. The institute expressed condolence on the sudden demise of the student.

Rajahmundry: A six-year-old girl was subjected to sexual assault by a youngster under the influence of liquor at Krishna Nagar under Three Town police station limits here in the wee hours on Wednesday.

According to police, the girl, whose mother works as a domestic help while father as a lorry driver, was staying at home along with her brother and her aunt’s daughter as her mother went out to attend prayer held on New Year’s eve at a local community hall.

The youngster identified as Sheik Vali, 20, and works as a construction labourer and resident of Seethampeta, entered the house under the influence of liquor, where the three children were sleeping.

He allegedly beat up the other two children and assaulted the girl sexually. As the girl’s mother returned home after prayers, she found her daughter undressed while the youngster with no trousers on him was lying on the bed.

Shocked at it, she shouted and caught hold of his hair and pulled him out of the house. As there was commotion at the house, local people came to her rescue and caught hold of the youth and beat him up.

The girl suffered minor injury on her lip. Three Town SI Parameshwar said, “Based on the complaint lodged by the mother, we have booked a case under Section 6 of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act and sent the girl for medical test to the government hospital.”

Meanwhile, the accused was at large and trainee DSP K. Srinivas is investigating the case.

Anantapur: The dispute between two friends in connection with the love affair, led to slit of throat at Dharmavarm in the district on Wednesday.

According to police, B. Somasekhar of Indira-nagar in Dharmavaram, was studying degree at a local degree college and also doing part time job as a painter.

He had friendship with Ramu, who was also a painter residing in the same colony. One year ago both were quarreled in connection with love affair but compromised.

Ramu developed grudge against Somasekhar and hatched plan to eliminate him. On Wednesday morning, when Somasekhar went to attend nature’s call, Ramu waylaid and attacked him with a sharp knife and slit the throat.

Though people in the colony tried to nab, Ramu managed to escape from the spot.

The victim has been shifted to Dharmavaram hospital and later Anantapur after his condition turned serious.

Rural sub-inspector K. Ravisankar Reddy registered a case and launched man hunt for the accused.

5 drown in sea in 3 different incidents

Nellore: The New Year Day witnessed drowning of 5 persons in Bay of Bengal in three different incidents in SPSR Nellore district on Wednesday.

A jolly trip to the beach to celebrate New Year Day to Kodur beach, 25 kms from Nellore, with friends has ended in a tragic note for two senior Intermediate students studying in Narayana Junior College located near Collector's Bungalow at Nellore.

Two out of five students went missing after they ventured into the sea on Wednesday morning. They have been identified as K. Likhit Reddy 17 and A. Satish Kumar Reddy 17 of Madanapalle in Chittoor district.

Body of Likhit Reddy was washed ashore after a while and police, with the help of fishermen, launched a search for the body of Satish Kumar.

A team of police went around in a boat looking for the body and returned without any luck in the evening.

In the second incident N. Babu, 27, of Renigunta and Munisekhar, 26, of Srikala-hasthi drowned when they went to the beach at Tupi-lipalem in Vakadu mandal. Babu was one among the six youth who came from Renigunta to celebrate the New Year at the beach.

Incidentally, Munisekhar drowned when he jumped into the water to save Babu after he noticed the former drowning. Their bodies washed ashore after few hours. Police sent the bodies for post-mortem to the government hospital in Balireddypalem after an inquest.

In the third incident, J. Venu 19 of Madarajugudur in Muthukur mandal met with watery grave in the beach at Koduru when he went for a swim along with five friends.

His body is also yet to be recovered. Mutthukur CI Ganga Venkateswarlu said that the beaches were overflowing with New Year revelers and many of them ignored the warnings to not to enter into the sea.

He said that consumption of liquor before venturing into the sea was the main reason for most of the deaths.

“Their reflexes will be poor once they are in an inebriated condition and they are unable to regain balance once waves push them down,” Venkates-warlu said.

He said that they have booked cases against several youth in the recent past when they found them driving in a drunken state after conducting checks with breath analyser.

400 drunk driving cases booked

Hyderabad: City police booked a total of 413 drunk driving cases in both Cyberabad and Hyde-rabad on New Year’s eve. Traffic cops and 16 special teams were on the road at midnight to control revelers.

Senior officials said there was not even a single fatal accident reported this year. In 2012, three persons had died and few others sustained injuries in road mishaps.

Cyberabad police booked as many as 435 cases under the Motor Vehicle Act for rash driving and other violations.

Cyberabad police commissioner C.V. Anand said that the New Year eve passed off without any major road mishap. “There were no fatal accidents reported in Cyberabad. The celebrations passed off peacefully,” he said.

While, the city roads were full of revelers, shouting and hooting, the police installed specific check-posts and conducted breath-analy-sing tests.

Officials said that all those who were “caught” in the tests, have been fined under the MV Act. They will be produced before the court.

“If the court directs, few of them will go to jail as well,” a traffic cop said.

Hyderabad traffic police caught 145 drunk bike riders and 41 inebriated car drivers in the check.

Hyderabad: New Year revelery  turned awry at KPHB for a 22-year-old engineering graduate who allegedly died due alcohol overdose.

Three friends of K. Ratnadeep, a resident of Mallapur, found him dead on Wednesday morning at their room at Dharma Reddy Colony in KPHB. The three had gone out on the New Year’s eve leaving behind Ratnadeep in the room as he was too inebriated to walk.

Police said that Ratnadeep, who is a graduate from Aurora’s Scientific and Technological Institute at Ghatkesar, was suffering from asthma.

The deceased’s friends informed the police that Ratnadeep drank three beers and some other drinks. When they returned, they found him lying down but did not notice anything amiss.

“According to the deceased’s friends, they realised that Ratnadeep was dead only on Wedne-sday morning when he did not wake up,” said M. Lingaiah, KPHB police station.

Cops said Ratnadeep, who hails from Sidd-ipet, was in search for a job in the city after completing his engineering. He was staying with his relatives in Mallapur.

On Tuesday, he went to his friend’s house at Dharma Red-dy Colony for New Year celebrations. He was suffering from asthma and could not reach for the inhaler in his inebriated state.

KPHB police booked a case under CrPc 174 for suspicious death and has started an investigation. The body was sent for post-mortem to Gandhi Mortuary.

Khammam: Nursing a grudge, a man murder-ed a carpenter on the banks of the river God-avari in Bhadrachalam on New Year’s eve.

The killer wanted to marry the carpenter’s wife.

Ella Mahesh had been pestering a woman asking her to reciprocate his love and marry him. Coming to know of this, the woman’s father warned Mahesh and got his daughter married to Sriharikrishna, a carpenter.

On Tuesday night, Mahesh took Sriharikrishna to the river bank to “celebrate” New Year.  Mahesh made his victim consume liquor, and then killed him.

Hyderabad: Drunk assailants allegedly attacked a 40-year-old man at Mallepally on Wednesday. The victim, Sheik Abdul Razak, the owner of an autorickshaw service centre and a resident of Laxminagar, succumbed to the injuries few hours later.

Cops suspect that the assailants believed to be one Habeeb and his relatives had attacked Razak to settle a past score.

Bhiksham Reddy, Humayunnagar inspector, said that there has been tension between Razak and Habeeb over parking issues.

Habeeb had quarreled with the victim claiming that autorickshaws coming to the service station were being parked in front of his house.

Razak was attacked at 2.45 am, when he was out on the street near his house in an inebriated condition.

The attackers, who were also drunk, confronted Razak and attacked him with sharp weapons.

“Razak sustained multiple injuries. Razak’s relatives took him to Osmania General Hospital, where he succumbed at 9 am,” said a cop.

Meanwhile, a local Congress politician alleged that Habeeb and his aides, who belong to another political party, attacked the victim to stophim from installing a poster on the street.

Rowdy’s body found dumped near bush

Chennai: A 28-year-old history-sheeter was hacked to death by unidentified men and his body dumped amidst bushes near Pattabiram on Tuesday.

Suresh alias ‘Panni’ Suresh was a resident of Pattabiram and was wanted in a murder case as also assault cases in the jurisdiction, the police said.

On Wednesday morning, a few passers-by noticed Suresh’s body in the bushes near defence factory and informed the police.

The police recovered Suresh’s semi-naked body - which showed five deep cut wounds - and sent it to the Kilpauk medical college hospital for autopsy.

Primary investigations revealed that Suresh had earlier got into an altercation with three persons in the area.

“We are strongly suspecting a quarrel to have escalated into a murderous rage,” said Pattabiram inspector M.G. Sundar.

Suresh’s wife Rekha (25) had lodged a missing complaint at the Pattabiram police station on Tuesday night as she found her husband’s mobile phone switched off and he hadn’t returned after he went to a nearby temple.

The Pattabiram police have detained two persons - Raja and Ramki - and are investigating further.

Salem: A CRPF constable was today detained after his wife, a Sri Lankan Tamil refugee, died under suspicious circumstances at her parent's house at Thammampatty near Salem, police said on Wednesday.

24-year old Gnanakumari was found lying unconscious soon after her husband Manojkumar left the house. She was rushed to the local government hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

The cause of death would be known only after post-mortem, police said adding it was suspected that Manokumar could have smothered her to death with a pillow.

The CRPF constable had married Gnanakumari six years ago after falling in lover with her. The couple had two sons.

Manojkumar, who used to visit the family once in six months on leave, had been suspecting the fidelity of his wife and used to quarrel with her, police said.

A case of suspicious death had been regsitered and Manoj­kumar detained by police.

Chennai: Three drunken passengers created a ruckus inside an MTC bus near Tambaram in the name of New Year celebrations and later damaged the glass panes of the vehicle.

According to sources, three men boarded the MTC night service bus (route No. M70C) at Chromepet bus stop.

They created a ruckus when the conductor asked them to buy tickets, howling that they wouldn't, as it was New Year.

Immediately, the conductor and driver offloa­d­ed them, following which th­ey started pelting st­o­n­es at the front glass wind­ow, damaging it.

The th­ree were caught by the MTC staff and the passengers and handed over to the Chromepet police station.

But the police let off the offenders with a warning after making them pay for the damage caused to the bus.

They found that the three were hotel employees. In another incident at Koyambedu, three youngsters were held for passing lewd comments at a couple after intercepting the bike they were riding.

New Year celebration escalates into caste clash, 14 arrested

Vellore: The Walajapet police arrested 14 persons on Tuesday night following a caste clash on New Year's Eve.

According to Walajapet SSI Suresh, members of two communities, residents of Thirumaaligai Street, began to celebrate New Year.

The celebrations escalated into confrontation involving seven members each from both castes.

The drunk group members drew out knives and began to attack each other. Arun Kumar and Janaki Raman, belonging to the same community, recei­ved knife cuts.

In retaliation, Kannan, belonging to the other caste, was attacked. A Walajapet police team which reached the spot arrested all the 14 drunken men and admitted the three injured persons to the Walajapet GH.

All the 14 were remanded on Wednesday morning, the police said.

Coimbatore: Three months after a girl went missing in Pollachi, police nabbed her boyfriend on Tuesday for strangling her and burying her body at Eachanari on the city outskirts.

An employee of a motor pump company at Kothavadi in Poll­achi, Vinodh (27), brought his lover and colleague, Sasikala to a shrub jungle at Eachanari and murdered her on the evening of October 24, 2013. 

He buried her body at Eac­hanari.  According to the police, Vino­dh allegedly mur­­d­er­ed Sasikala beca­use her pare­nts were planning to marry her off to her aunt’s son.  

When Sasikala did not return home after work, her father Pattu Raja of Unchalvelampattu village, lodged a complaint with the all- woman police station.

As Vinodh too went missing, the police initially suspected that the pair had eloped.

However, on Tuesday, the police spotted Vinodh on the outskirts of Pollachi and picked him up for interrogation. Vinodh confessed to having murdered Sasikala after a bitter wrangle at Eachanari.

Home guard held for murder

Chennai: The police arrested a home guard for the murder of his neighbour in Vyasarpadi, on Wednesday.

The home guard official, Ganesan, had attacked his neighbour, Neelaraman, a vendor, on Sunday after his wife had sought Ganesan’s help following her husband’s violent behaviour in a drunken state.

Ganesan pushed Neelaraman down, injuring him. He was admitted to the Stanley medical college hospital and the police had registered a case under section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder) and arrested Ganesan on Monday.

On Wednesday, Neelaraman succumbed to his injuries, after which the case was altered to murder.

Vellore: Lakshmi (23), wife of Loganathan, who came to her mother’s house in Bajanai Koil Street, K.P. Thangal Village, Nandavaram PO, Arcot taluk, on Tuesday killed her two-and-a-half-year-old son by setting him on fire with the help of an LPG cylinder and burnt herself.

According to Arcot taluk police station SSI Arumugam, Lakshmi, who got married in 2010, had quarrelled with Loganathan a few days ago.

In a fit of anger, she took her child from Ammur to her mother’s house. According to the complaint filed by Lakshmi’s father Munusamy, his daughter appeared depressed.

When asked about the reason, she said she was being harassed for dowry by her husband.

On Wednesday early morning when Munusamy went to the paddy field, Lakshmi used the LPG in the cylinder to kill herself and her son Dilli Kumar, the police said.

On hearing the commotion, her neighbours flocked to the house to save them. Lakshmi died at home, while Dilli Babu died on way to the Vellore GH.

Theni: Enraged over his wife’s refusal to give him money for booze on New Year’s eve, a 55-year-old drunkard allegedly hacked her to death and surrendered before the police at a village in the district on Wednesday.

Kaliyappan of Visuvasapuram, near Bodi, had returned home Tuesday night after drinking to celebrate the dawn of New Year. He asked his 49-year-old wife Vadivukarasi for money to get more liquor, the police said.

However, as she refused to give him money, he hacked her to death with a sharp-edged weapon and left the house.

On Wednesday morning, he went to the Periyakulam police station and surrendered. The police went to the village and retrieved the body from the house.

Kaliyappan was arrested and produced before a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody.

Bangalore: New Year celebrations cost a motorist performing stunts on his two-wheeler his life, and injured three others near Town Hall early Wednesday.

The police have identified the deceased as Saleem Pasha (24), a resident of Valmikinagar. Sal­eem along with his frie­nds Nadeem, Chetan and Sandeep were riding two mopeds from their residence in Valimi­kanagar.

They were on their way to the Town Hall from Hudson Circle. It is alleged that Saleem while performing stunts lost control of his vehicle and rammed into Nadeem’s moped at around 12.15 am. The two mopeds then collided head on with a scooter  on JC Road.

The scooterist Kailash Chandre Gowda, a resident of Gowdanapalya, sustained serious head injuries and has been shifted to a private hospital in Kengeri. His condition is said to be
critical.

Saleem, who was shifted to Victoria hospital, succumbed to his inju­ries around 1.50 am. Meanwhile Nadeem, Che­tan and Sandeep are undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

“My son left home in the night with his friend Nadeem. Late in the night we got a call from the police asking us to come to Victoria hospital as my son had met with an accident.

When we reached the hospital, he had died,” said Anwar Pasha, father of Saleem.

“I am not aware if my son performed stunts on his moped as he never rode like that in front of me,” Anwar added.

“My brother left home to celebrate New Year and do not know how he ended up in the accident.

We came to know about the accident only after the police telephoned us,” said Kailasha’s bro­ther.

The police are waiting for the post mortem report to ascertain if Saleem was in an inebriated state. The Ulsoor Gate traffic police have registered a case.

Tragic New Year Eve: 2 stabbed to death

Bangalore: Two youths were murdered in separate incidents over trivial issues on New Year’s eve. The murders we­re reported in Kora­mangala and Madiwala police station limits ea­rly Wednesday.

Faisal (24), a two-wheeler mechanic was stab­bed to death by a group of unidentified men near the Mad­­i­vala check post around 2.30 am on Wed­nesday.

Faisal drove his autorickshaw M.G. Road to celebrate New Year’s  eve with his frie­nds. After the celebrations, the group left the place around 1.30 am.

Faisal who was driving the auto overtook another auto near Adugodi and stopped near an eatery to eat his dinner.

While they were waiting for the food, the auto which Faisal overtook also stopped at the same restaurant.

An argument ensued between Faisal and the other men. As the fight became aggressive, the group stabbed Faisal and fled, the police said.

Faisal was rushed to a nearby hospital but he died on the way. The body has been shifted to Victoria hospital mortuary, the police added. The Kora­mangala police have registered a case.

In another incident, 23-year-old Umesh K, a resident of T Dasarahalli, was stab­bed to death by an unidentified man, suspected to be his friend. Umesh, a BCom grad­ua­te, retur­ned ho­­me after Ne­w Year celebrations.

He stepped out of the house aro­und 12.30 am as his friend had come to meet him. What followed was an argument over a trivial issue.

Umesh brought a knife and tried to attack his friend with it.

However the accused overpowered Um­esh and stab­bed him. Umesh died on the way to a hospital, the police said. Umesh was earlier wanted in an attempt to murder and assault case, the police said.

Koppal: A 26-year-old software engineer from Delhi drowned in a swimming pool situated near the guest house of Kal­yani steel factory at Gini­gera on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Akhit, who was in Koppal on a work trip. Akhit and his friends had organised a New Year party on Tuesday night at the guest house.

The engineer slipped into the swimming pool in an inebriated condition. His body was found later on Wednesday morning.

A case has been registered at Munirabad police station.

Kozhikode: The Kozhikode bar council has suspended a woman advocate for allegedly spreading indecent comments against colleagues through facebook. 

The decision was taken at the last meeting of the outgoing bar council managing committee held on December 31.

It was on November 26, 2013 that Adv M Anima posted some comments on her FB wall about the ‘flirtatious’ comments by her male colleagues.

The matter was discussed at the meeting of the bar council in December and it called her for a hearing. But, she failed to attend the hearing.  

Former president of Kozhikode Bar Association Adv N Bhaskaran Nair told Deccan Chronicle that the matter was just an internal issue of the association which was not meant for publication.

However Kozhikode bar association former secretary Adv BN Binesh told DC that there was such an incident on which the association took  disciplinary action, suspending the advocate for one month.

Adv Anima told DC that the action of the association was against the freedom of expression.

Couple killed as tipper, bike collide

Kochi: Two people were killed when a tipper truck collided with a motorbike at Athani Junction near Nedumbassery airport on Wednesday morning.

The dead were identified as Sivadasan (48), son of Ramakrishnan of Manapattuthara House at Kokkunnam near Mookkannur in Thrissur, and his wife Bindu (44).

The accident occurred at around 8.30 am when the couple were returning home after visiting the Aluva Siva temple.

The tipper truck came from behind, lost control and collided with the motorbike they were on, said the Nedumbassery police.

The couple were taken to a private hospital but succumbed to their injuries on the way.

The post-mortems were conducted at the taluk hospital later. The bodies were then released to the family.
