Vijayawada: An accused in a rape case was convicted and sentenced for 10 years imprisonment after the prosecution successfully proved his guilt with the help of DNA test.

Garadi Vasureddy, 50, a petty trader of Poorna-nandampet in the city, impregnated a minor girl in 2011. The girl delivered a girl in May 2012 at the age of 12.

Satyanarayanapuram police registered a case with number 86/2014 following a complaint by the girl’s mother and began the probe.

The public prosecutor collected all evidence to prove the guilt of the accused and a DNA test was conducted to determine the parenthood of the girl.

The paternity test results proved that Vasureddy is the father of the girl. Based on the evidence, Mahila Sessions court judge Nirmala Gitamba delivered the judgment on Wednesday convicting and sentencing the accused to 10 years imprisonment.

This is the first conviction based on DNA test in Vijayawada city in recent years. According to prosecution, Garadi Vasureddy, a confectionery trader had hired a minor girl as domestic maid at his residence in Poornanandampet.  Due to poverty, the mother of the girl had left her at the Vasireddy’s residence for the domestic work.

The culprit raped the minor girl over a period of time impregnating her. The mother of the girl lodged a complaint with Satyanarayanapu-ram police in February, 2012 about the rape.

The then circle inspector G. Ramakrishna registered a case and  the charge sheet was filed in May 2012. Initially, the Vasireddy denied the crime.

But the investigating officers collected the DNA samples from the girl, the baby and the accused and sent them to Centre for DNA Finger printing and Diagnotics (CDFD) in Hyderabad.

Besides the results of CDFD, the judge examined 17 witnesses before convicting Vasireddy for the crime.
The then investigation officer G. Ramakrishna said this is the first case in recent years in which a conviction was made in Vijayawada city on the basis of DNA test.

Deputy director of prosecutions B. Ramakoteswara Rao said the government was keen on helping the prosecutors in proving the guilt and render assistance to punish the guilty.

Eve-teaser ‘escapes’ from cop’s clutches

DC/Prakruti Koratagere

Bangalore: Being the daughter of a former police officer, this 33-year-old reputed children’s dentist did not flinch when she had to nab an eve-teaser inside Forum Mall; but she was left disappointed when she found out upon reaching Adugodi police station a while later that the suspect had managed to ‘conveniently’ escape from the clutches of the police.

Paedodontist Dr Tanya (name changed) was shopping in the bustling More supermarket located on the ground floor of Forum Mall on the evening of December 29 when the incident occurred.

Around 7.30 pm, Dr Tanya was reportedly walking along the aisles of the store when a man named Arjun allegedly began making lewd gestures and hurling abuses at her.

Not one to take such actions lightly, the victim mustered courage and nabbed the eve-teaser with the help of some other shoppers. Keen on teaching him a lesson, Dr Tanya then informed the jurisdictional Adugodi police, who sent a beat constable, identified as Somanna, to the spot.

Here’s what happened next: Constable Somanna was supposed to take Arjun to the Adugodi police station for questioning, while Dr Tanya was told that the matter would be “handled” from there.

However, knowing the rules associated with filing a complaint and presuming that she would need to complete certain formalities, the victim decided to go to the station later around 9 pm.

She was in for a rude shock however, for when she reached the station, Dr Tanya was told that the eve-teaser had ‘escaped’ while he was being brought to the station, which is only 200 meters away from the mall.

The flustered paedodontist then filed a complaint against the eve-teaser anyway and the police registered a case under section 509 of the IPC (outraging the modesty of a woman).

The victim also did not forget to mention the negligence shown by constable Somanna in letting the eve-teaser escape, according to a senior police officer who is aware of the case.

When contacted, Dr Tanya requested Deccan Chronicle to conceal her identity, fearing for her and her newly-born child’s safety.

“My father, being a former police officer, insisted upon pursuing the case in order to get justice for the carelessness shown by the police.

However, following my complaint against the erring constable, the police claimed they managed to re-apprehend Arjun a few hours after he escaped. With this development, I might withdraw the complaint.”
