CPM fails to end Koyilandy crisis

Kozhikode: The attempt by the CPM district leadership to bring about a truce with the rebels in Koyilandy following the suspension of N.V. Balakrishnan for one year from the primary membership of the party has hit a roadblock with the rebels insisting on the removal of K.K. Muhammad, area committee secretary, from the post.
A meeting of the Kozhikode district secretariat of the party held on Thursday night failed to work out a formula acceptable to the rebels, sources said. CPM state secretariat member Elamaram Kareem was also present at the meeting. The party leaders told the rebels that the demand for action against Muhammad would be considered after the Lok Sabha polls.
The rebels rejected the proposal and will go ahead with a convention planned on Monday. K. Santha, wife of Balakrishnan, will submit her resignation as Koyilandy municipal chairperson on Monday, a source said.
The rebels also claimed that 13 out of the 27 municipal councillors of the CPM will also submit their resignation on Monday. CPM sources, however, said that only four or five councillors will resign as the party had won over the rest.
A district committee meeting of the CPM scheduled to be held on Saturday is expected to take disciplinary action against Santha if she fails to attend office on Saturday. She had submitted a letter to party leadership expressing her desire to resign from the post following action against Balakrishnan.
