Punnathurkotta to reopen today
The ban on visitors here was imposed from December 19 onwards.
Thrissur: The Punnathurkotta elephant sanctuary in Guruvayur, which has been closed for a month, is set to reopen for tourists from Wednesday onwards.
The decision follows an inspection of the facility conducted on January 9 by an expert team led by K.C. Panicker, which submitted a report to the Guruvayur Devaswom that the threat of foot and mouth disease has subsided.
The experts have also recommended withdrawal of the regulation on the movement of these elephants to attend festivals outside.
The ban on visitors here was imposed from December 19 onwards as a precautionary measure after a couple of elephants in the state were confirmed with the disease.
This was for the first time in the last three decades that the facility was closed down for such a long period.
