AAP faces gang rape heat
Try all rape cases in fast-track court, Sisodia asks CJI.
New Delhi: The gangrape of the Danish woman in the heart of the nation capital has put a a question mark on the AAP’s electoral promise to make Delhi safe for women.
A Danish tourist was allegedly robbed and gang raped at knife-point near the New Delhi railway station by around six men, in a grim reminder of the 13-month-old shocking incident here.
Two people were held on Wednesday in connection with the incident. The victim, who reached India on January 1, lost her way to her hotel in Paharganj on Tuesday, following which she asked a group of six men for directions. They took her to a secluded place, robbed her and took turns to rape her at knife-point, police said.
Expressing concern over the security of women in Delhi, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma, on Wednesday called on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, to take necessary steps for ensuring the safety of women in the city.
“The message that is going out is very bad for the nation. Arvind Kejriwal has made a promise that their party will ensure women safety first,” she said.
Condemning the incident, the AAP stressed the need for fast-track courts, and for bringing the Delhi Police under the purview of the state government.
Kejriwal on Wednesday spoke to lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung. Kejriwal, Jung, and the Delhi police commissioner would now meet to review the rape incidents that have occurred in the last one year.
“We will also request the Chief Justice of India to take all the rape cases to fast track courts, so that the strictest punishment is meted out to the culprits,” state minister Manish Sisodia said.
AAP leader Kumar Vishwas said “If any such incident happens in Delhi, there should be a home minister, so that he can look after the Delhi affairs.”
