New Delhi : The Centre is expected to reject the mercy plea of 1993 Mumbai blasts death row convict Yakub Memon, with the Maharashtra government asking the Union home ministry to reject his mercy petition. The file is likely to be sent to President Pranab Mukherjee soon.

Yakub Abdul Razak Memon is the main accused and the brother of Tiger Memon (mastermind and absconding key conspirator) in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts that killed 257 people. He was awarded the death sentence by the Supreme Court on March 21, 2013.

Tiger Memon, along with India’s most wanted Dawood Ibrahim, are the other key accused, who are absconding. Yakub Memon had sought a presidential pardon in October last year, and the President forwarded his plea to the Union home ministry, which in turn sought the state government’s views. Memon, is a qualified chartered accountant, and had cleared the master's degree in English literature examination with second division in 2012.

His brother Tiger Memon is wanted by the Interpol and the CBI.
