Kolkata: Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Shibpur, on Tuesday conferred D Litt (honoris causa) degree on former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly at its last convocation on February 25, 2014 before it is re-christened as Indian Institute of Science, Engineering and Technology (IIEST).

The degree was conferred by chancellor of BESU and Governor of West Bengal M K Narayanan, while the citation stated that Ganguly proved outstanding in the cricketing world with superb captaincy coupled with aggression and determination.

In his acceptance speech, Ganguly said this honour "was not the first one, but definitely the best one as it has come from my state". "I had never thought that I will ever reach this stage to get such a coveted honour," he said. Ganguly also gave a piece of advice to the passing-out students that each one should work hard and give his or her best in doing things.
