Hyderabad: After nine days of high drama, the authorities at the English and Foreign Language University reopened the three reading rooms inside the library for students. The decision came after some protesting students broke the library door on Tuesday and barged inside.

"On Tuesday, the university had completely blocked off the library for students. There was no prior notice nor had the authorities cited a valid reason. The decision was taken without consulting the student representative in the 12-member committee. However, we are happy that the reading rooms have now been reopened,” said the students.

The Eflu library has three large reading rooms that are widely used by students (hostel and day scholars), teachers as well as the non-teaching staff.
“Most of us get to read the newspaper, magazines and even surf the Internet as WiFi facility is available. PhD students prepare for presentations in these rooms,” said a student.
Eflu has around 1,564 student, of which about 400 are research scholars and about 1,000 are pursing graduation. The university collects Rs 1,000 from each scholar towards library fee and Rs 500 from the under-graduates. An additional service charge of Rs 300 is also collected.

“In interest of the students, the university has decided to reopen the library. However, disciplinary action will be initiated for breaking the library door,” said a senior member from the Eflu administration.
