Chennai’s kids make sure that parents vote
Observers, introduced by EC to improve people’s participation, will ascertain the public awareness for LS polls
Chennai: While political parties have intensified their poll campaign in Tamil Nadu, the local bodies are gearing up for the April 24 polls.
The city corporation enlisted school and college students on Saturday to improve voter awareness through rallies and distribution of pamphlets on the importance of voting. The Chennai corporation has issued 1.75 lakh pledge letters to students, urging their parents to vote. “On Sunday, we are organising rallies with the students, signature campaigns and some musical events on voting,” said a corporation official at Adyar.
Awareness Observers, introduced by the Election Commission of India to improve people’s participation, will ascertain the public awareness quotient on the polls from Sunday. They will oversee management of the electoral process at the field level and gauge how voter awareness is generated to increase the number of voters this parliamentary election.
The AOs will participate in awareness rallies conducted by the Corporation, focusing on low voter turn out areas and conducting campaigns there.
