Mystic Mantra: The power of relaxation
With the relaxed body it will be easier to ask the mind to relax
Workaholism is a respectable addiction in the modern world but it is costing human beings poor health, stressed relationships, depression and fatigue. Having acquired the status of a respectable addiction, workaholics don’t want to look into it as a disease. However, researchers in New Zealand have found that people who work at least 50 hours a week are up to three times more likely to face alcohol problems. Earlier this month, the American Journal of Epidemiology reported on a global study showing that over-workers are between 40 and 80 per cent more likely to suffer from heart disease than others.
It is hard for modern people to relax physically and mentally. I think it is the inability of mental relaxation that makes the physical relaxation difficult. Strangely enough, it is this lack of relaxation that has disconnected people with themselves; they kind of feel uprooted. If somehow the art of relaxing is brought back in the modern lifestyle, the big problem of workaholism will be solved. Because relaxation has miracuous powers. It brings new light to your eyes, a new freshness to your being.
Osho says relaxation is a must for maintaining sanity. He has prescribed a method of auto hypnosis to relax at three levels: body, mind and heart. It can be done in a few minutes. Sit or lie comfortably, close your eyes, play some soft music and tell your body: you are relaxing... every pore is relaxing... you are relaxed. Very soon you will go into a translike state –– at home and at peace with the body. With the relaxed body it will be easier to ask the mind to relax. Talk to the mind in the same manner. The chattering of the mind will stop. After the mind is relaxed, whisper to your heart. Actually the heart is forever relaxed, but you don’t feel it because it is overpowered by the turbulence of the mind.
And mind you, relaxation is not against work, on the contrary it is a tremendous boost to the capacity to work better.
If you can relax deeply, your body will be rejuvenated, your heart will be refreshed, your intelligence will be sharper, and you will see it reflected in the work. You will not be frantic anymore, you will go directly to the core of the matter. You will do things that are needed to be done; you will not waste time doing unnecessary trivia. You will say only that which is needed to be said. Your movements will become graceful; your life will become a poetry. For a few days you will find it difficult because of the old habit but once the old pattern has broken your life will take a new high.
