Why can’t Alia Bhatt and Imran Khan vote?
The actress has been encouraging others to vote
Mumbai: Bollywood actors Alia Bhatt and Imran Khan will not be able to cast their votes this year as they do not hold Indian passports as reported in Hindustan Times. The 21-year-old 'Highway' actress holds a British passport.
“ Unfortunately, I can’t vote as I have a British passport,” said Alia. She had also mentioned this in a recent promotional event.
“ I am past the date (to get the official documents for voting) this time around, but I will try and get my voting card the next time, once I get my dual citizenship”
India however doesn’t offer dual citizenship. Though the charming actress won’t cast her vote this time, she has been encouraging others in any way possible to cast their votes.
The actress acquired citizenship of the country, as her mother is of British origin.
Meanwhile actor Imran Khan is a citizen of the United States of America by birth and won’t be able to cast his vote for the upcoming 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.
“ Unfortunately, India doesn’t allow dual citizenship- at least till now. Efforts have been on to find a way out, but there hasn’t been any result. And my problem is that if I give up my UD passport, I will be required to pay 10 years’ tax in advance. So I don’t know what to do,” said Imran.
