Hyderabad: Eleven people have been admitted with food poisoning to the Fever Hospital after consuming burgers and pizzas at Bake Well bakery at Hafeez Baba Nagar in Barkas on Wednesday.

More than 20 people were rushed to Fever Hospital on Tuesday night after they had food at the bakery and complained of stomach ache and vomiting.

A 23-year-old woman who came in with the same symptoms, but suffered from epilepsy, had convulsions and died. In her case doctors have ruled out food poisoning. Many of the victims rushed to the hospital said there was a peculiar smell in the food. But none complained except for a few college students.

Khaja Gousuddin, parent of 20-year-old patient Mohammed Aleemuddin said, “My son and three of his friends were returning from a college exam. They stopped at the bakery and had a burger. It had a pungent smell. They complained to the owner. The order was cancelled and later they had a pizza. At 10 pm, he complained of severe nausea and vomiting. We rushed him to a private clinic but the situation didn’t improve and we brought him to Fever Hospital.”

Fever hospital superintendent K. Shankar said, “The 20 affected people are clinically stable now. The food particles might have had fungal infection. The stool and blood samples of patients have been sent for tests.”

He explained that food poisoning and gastroenterology cases are very common in the summer.

“People should consume fresh food and avoid eating food that has been prepared a day before. Also, foods that are micro-waved and served do not necessarily mean that they are fresh. People must check before they order these foods.”

GHMC food inspector E. Sudershan Reddy said, “We have shut down the bakery. We have taken the food samples of pizza, burger, cakes and pastry and sent it for testing to the state laboratory. Till the results come, the bakery will be closed. Further action will be taken according to the reports of the laboratory tests.”
