New Delhi: CPI on Tuesday asked the Election Commission to take urgent steps to stop 'WhatsApp' messages carrying "communal" content and seeking votes for BJP and Narendra Modi.

In a letter to the poll panel, party National Secretary Amarjit Kaur said these "communal messages on WhatsApp are also being propagated with impunity for seeking votes. These messages are mainly for seeking votes for BJP and Narendra Modi."

They were not only in complete violation of Constitution and the model code of conduct, but seriously hurt the feelings, she said and also forwarded the text to the poll panel.

Urging the EC to take cognizance of the messages, Kaur asked the panel to take immediate action to stop such propaganda in the interest of free and fair election and sought action against those indulging in this campaign of hatred.
