Kochi: There is a touch of Tamil in her Malayalam, as Sunu Lakshmi speaks from her home in Kochi. She begins her story, from the day a Tamil director saw her in a Malayalam music video and wanted to cast her in his movie. In the song Azhakotha Myna..., Asif Ali runs through the shores of a Malabar beach and the green trees of a quiet village with a girl with big eyes, and a shawl wrapped around her head. It is her big eyes that brought Sunu to music videos and showbiz at the age of 13!

Director Chandrasekharan traced Sunu Lakshmi through Thangaraj, Meera Jasmine’s manager, and brought her to Tamil Nadu as the heroine of Sirithal Rasipen.

Therein began a career for the schoolgirl who kept taking up Tamil movies one after the other, till a year ago. “That’s when I got the offer in Snehamulloral Koodeyullappol, opposite Manikuttan and Madhan,” she says. Sunu plays the bold Janaki in the film.

Sunu has acted in quite a few Tamil movies by the time her first Malayalam movie came about. “My second movie was Paisa; I did when I was in Class X.” She holds her third movie, Sengathu Bhoomiyile, close to her heart, where she played one of the two heroines, along with Priyanka. “Ilayaraja did the music of the film; his song En Usiru Enne Vittu… was a gift.”

She is eagerly awaiting the release of two Tamil movies — Eppodhum Vendran and Thavamindri Kidaitha Varame next month. “In between, I also joined for a reality show called Dance Party on Kairali Channel and with my choreographer Sanoj, our team has been leading till the semi finals. Now I am waiting for its finale next month.”
