Bengaluru: On December 29, 2013, a little over a month after Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar played his last competitive match, another great, one who came closest to achieving the Mumbai magician’s greatness, hung up his boots, bringing to an end a glorious chapter in South African cricket. Jacques Kallis is back to doing what he does best after a four month break. The 38 year old, who was retained by Kolkata Knight Riders, believes he is fresh, mentally and physically, to take on new challenges in IPL7.

The all rounder reflected on life post retirement in an exclusive chat with Deccan Chronicle.  “I’ve been enjoying it a lot,” he said. “I got some time to spend with my friends and family, something I couldn’t do earlier. It’s been nice to get away from cricket.” Kallis added: “Playing in the IPL after retirement is nice. I kind of feel fresh both mentally and physically. Iam ready and raring to go and I hope I play a role in helping KKR in having a good tournament. I know the family pretty well, so I’m excited.” said Kallis, who signed off from international cricket with a classy century against India at Kingsmead in Durban.

Explaining the challenges of playing in the UAE, Kallis observed, “It’s something new for every franchise, no one has really played too much cricket here. It’s pretty neutral.” Kallis exuded confidence in the Gautam Gambhir led team. “I think we have a very good side,” said the batsman who executes every shot with copybook precision. “We are well balanced and have covered all our bases. You know, we have a team that can play on all surfaces.”

Showering praise on his new look team, Kallis said the side was determined to regain the title won in 2012.  “I think we have some very good chances. Like I said, we’ve covered all our bases from a team point of view and it’s just a matter of putting the pieces of the puzzle together,” the allrounder added.
