Mumbai: After nearly six years of a will they-won’t they, filmmaker and YRF honcho Aditya Chopra and actress Rani Mukherjee finally tied the knot in “a small, intimate ceremony in Italy” on Monday.
A friend of the actress told DC that the nuptials were initially planned for 2013. “The Chopras wanted Adi and Rani to get married last year. That plan was put on hold due to the unfortunate demise of Aditya’s father, legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra. It was then decided that the wedding date be postponed by a year,” the source revealed.
We also hear that the Chopra family, including matriarch Pamela and Adi’s younger brother Uday, flew to Italy a few days before the wedding. Aditya, meanwhile, flew in on Saturday.
“Rani’s family too had been asked to keep mum about the details,” our source added.
There had been a hint the ceremony would not be the big, fat Bollywood wedding when Rani’s close friend choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant, admitted the couple might not prefer the traditional sangeet ceremony before the nuptials.
“Aditya absolutely dislikes being the centre of attention. He is a very low profile guy,” Vaibhavi had said. And true to his personality, the wedding to Rani was extremely low key indeed. Apart from family, close friends like Karan Johar and Vaibhavi were present. There was no confirmation on whether Uday’s rumoured girlfriend Nargis Fakhri was part of the celebrations.
Rani issued a statement to her fans that said: “It was a beautiful wedding in the Italian countryside with just a few of our close family and friends with us. The one person I missed terribly was Yash uncle, but I know he was there with us in spirit and his love and blessings will always be with Adi and me. I have always believed in fairy-tales and with God’s grace my life has been exactly like one, and now as I enter the most important chapter of my life, the fairy-tale continues.”
YRF also issued a statement confirming, “Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukherjee got married on April 21 in Italy. The wedding was an intimate affair with close family and friends.”
