Nalgonda: Nalgonda, traditionally a Congress bastion, is partially leaning towards the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, as many in the Bhongiri Parliamentary constituency want to see party chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao as the first chief minister of Telangana.

Though there hasn’t been much presence of the TRS in the previous elections, post bifurcation, emotionally charged voters seem to have placed their trust on the TRS supremo. However, certain major mandals of the Nalgonda Parliament constituency continue to favour the Congress.

Mangala Kumari, a 39-year-old farmer from Alair Assembly constituency, said, “After the late YSR, KCR is one leader who understands the plight of farmers. We cannot take a chance with the Congress government after the demise of YSR. We have already seen KCR putting his life at stake for Telangana. Even the minorities and tribals see him as the ideal candidate for CM.”

Meanwhile, the youth of the area are mobilising. Young party leaders of the Congress and the TRS, on whom the candidates bank, have been taking the lead in campaigning. Anjani Kumar, a student said, “Born in Telangana, many of us are deprived of government jobs in our
own state. KCR had said nothing wrong when he asked people to get back to their state for jobs. Every manufacturing and service sector will boom if the TRS takes charge.”

Contesting for the first time, Dr P. Rajeshwar Reddy, MP candidate for Nalgonda, said, “In three years, every house will have drinking and irrigation water. An end to unemployment and no ground water contamination can become a reality only if the TRS takes charge. People will be fooled again if they vote for the Congress.”

The Congress following, however, remains strong in certain major mandals as traditional voters do not believe in sub regional parties. Venkat Prasad of Huzurnagar gives credit to the Congress for the area’s progress.

“Around Rs 3,500 crore was pumped into the Huzurnagar Assembly constituency in the last five years. Tar roads, government college and the 100-bed hospital are proof enough; today, many villages enjoy Krishna water facility. The region has developed to such an extent than an acre costs a crore in Mellacheruvu owing to industrial expansion. Many drinking water schemes have also been implemented.”

Speaking to this newspaper, Uttam Kumar Reddy, sitting MLA from Huzurnagar, said, “The Srisailam Left Bank Canal project is progressing at a fast pace. The proposed national highway connecting Deveralonda, Miryalgudda, Kodad and other mandals is at the sanctioning stage with the Central government. The Congress has modified Nalgonda. Beneficiaries will continue to have faith in us; this election will not put an end to my record.”

Sitting MP Gutta Sukender Reddy promised: “All cement and other industries in Nalgonda will have railway connectivity and the target is to supply Krishna water to 1,000 villages affected by fluoride.”
