Hyderabad: Union minister of state Sarve Satyanarayana, Congress candidate from the Malkajgiri LS constituency, has a huge list of promises and says that he would implement them if elected.
Racing against time to cover every corner of India’s largest constituency, with a day left for campaigning, Mr Satyanarayana looked fresh and raring to go.
“I was invited by some Christian friends to attend Sunday church in the constituency. I am rushing there. It’s a privilege serving people for the last three decades,” said
Mr Satyanarayana, 60, who makes it a point to visit the places of worship of all communities.
Deccan Chronicle sought his views on various issues and his promises. Excerpts:
What’s your priority if elected again?
My focus will be on basic amenities. Though I tried to do my best during my tenure, the task is unfinished. I promise drinking water connection to all houses, houses for weaker sections, issuance of the 20,000 house site title deeds to the poor, bringing the third phase of Krishna waters and Godavari water to the city to supply drinking water to all. I want to ensure the poor get drinking water connection at Rs 100 per connection in GHMC.
You have promised to extend the Metro Rail to some areas in your constituency.
Yes, you are right. I am trying to see that Metro Rail is extended to some more areas in the constituency like Uppal to Ghatkesar, Cantonment area among others. I am confident I will do it.
There are a plethora of problems in the Cantonment and other parts of your constituency?
The first and foremost is the Cantonment Board. I am for the merger of the Cantonment Board with the GHMC so that people have access to all facilities enjoyed by other localities in the city. The SCB is doing a postman job when there is a possibility of direct interface with the people. My constituency is a mix of urban and rural segments which includes the Medchal, Qutballapur, Nizampet etc. I will also strive for a Building Regularisation Scheme for Cantonment, which has grown haphazardly.
The age-old Octroi toll tax is still being collected in Cantonment? Why?
It should be abolished immediately. For a mere Rs 10 crore to Rs 12 crore revenue per annum people are being harassed. They are fed up with it. I also want registration charges to be abolished for ex-servicemen.
The defence authorities’ closure of the main thoroughfare and subsequent restrictions has angered the people, Why have these restrictions after years of public use?
It’s wrong on the part of defence authorities to close an age-old road in the name of security. Now they have restricted entry. It is causing problems to all sections of the people especially the old and the infirm, employees, women and students. What security threat is there from locals? I took up the matter with the defence minister and he has instructed the authorities to lift the restrictions.
What are you developmental plans for the constituency in particular and the region in general?
A: Improving the road network, drinking water connection to every household, more flyovers, uninterrupted power supply, and infrastructure facilities are top on my list. I was instrumental in converting 2,000 km of state roads into national highways at a cost of Rs 5000 crore. There are four to eight lane roads. Out of the Rs 1,200 crore Central Road Fund, I ensured Rs 200 crore for Malkajgiri LS constituency besides pumping in MPLAD funds and state funds.
