Chennai: A 31-year-old Nigerian woman suspected to have psychological issues was on Monday rescued by the police after complaints of the woman loitering around the streets of J.J Nagar poured in at the local police station.

The woman identified as Oluchi Confidance Nwachi from the Nigerian capital, Abuja was enrolled in a US based airhostess-training institute, which has a training center at Padi in Chennai, police investigations revealed. J.J Nagar police inspector, Ravi rescued the girl and sent her to the Institute of Medical Health (IMH) at Kilapuk Medical College Hospital for observation.

Verification of documents revealed that Ms Oluchi had arrived at the city on November 18, 2013 to enroll in the airhostess-training course at the center here. She also had an Outpatient (OP) receipt for being treated at IMH on April 22 and a visiting card of the flight school after which cops took her to the institute.

However, the management had told the police that the student’s course was terminated following her failure to adhere to the norms laid down by the school.

“Ms Oluchi’s termination was issued on March 18 and the same was conveyed to the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and to the student’s parents, who reportedly acknowledged the girl’s medical history of psychological problems,” police quoted the management as saying. However, instead of using her ‘open air ticket’ for the return journey, the student was loitering on the streets.

Police said that the immigration officials had recommended the school to take responsibility of sending the woman back to Nigeria, but her mother, when contacted by the school, reportedly told them not to send her to Nigeria, but to United Kingdom.

When contacted, the school management said that the student’s behavior raised concern and their attempts to reform her behavior failed. Citing legal issues, the school left her in the custody of JJ Nagar police a week ago. However, she managed to break out from there.

“We contacted her parents, who revealed that she had psychological problems. We want to ensure her safe return and we technically cannot take her into custody since her course was terminated for her violations of school code”, a representative of the management said.

Meanwhile, police got her admitted to YWCA international guest house on Poonamallee high road and after they received a complaint of unruly behavior by the Nigerian national on Monday, she was produced before a Judicial Magistrate court in Ambattur.

The magistrate had directed the cops to admit the student at IMH and to keep her under observation for 10 days and take adequate measures to send her back to Nigeria.
