Hyderabad: Conducting common admissions for both Telangana and Seemandhra regions for professional courses by adhering to stipulated deadlines after bifurcation of state on June 2, will be a challenging task for officials of higher education. Officials await clarity from both the new governments after assuming power after June 2  on who will  conduct counselling for admissions since all the departments will be divided by then.

Setting up of a common counselling board for both  states for admissions to medical, engineering, management courses etc would be an ideal solution to ensure that the interests of students from both the states are protected, according to officials. The AP Reorganisation Bill-2014 envisages common admissions and quotas for both the states for a period of ten years.

The government conducts common entrance tests such as Eamcet for  engineering/medical admissions, Icet for MBA/ MCA, Edcet for B.Ed, Lawcet for LLB/LLM, PGECET for M.Tech etc. every year and conducts common counselling for admissions. However, this year, all the CETs are facing a peculiar situation with exams being held in a united state and  results  and  counselling in separate states. The department of technical education which conducts Eamcet and Icet counselling will  be bifurcated before June 2.

Officials opine that constituting a common counselling board comprising of officials from both the states would clear all  apprehensions and doubts of  students about securing seats in the best colleges. Majority of the toppers in all CETs opt for seats in the best colleges located in and around Hyderabad. It will lead to unnecessary controversies if a merit student is denied a seat in counselling based on region.
