Thousands of liquor bottles, crores of cash recovered by poll officials

Bhimavaram: Nearly Rs 2.90 crore cash, concealed in the doors of a car, was seized by the police and statistical surveillance team during an inspection carried out as part of implementation of model code of conduct for the polls here on Monday.

Narasapuram DSP Raghuveera Reddy told newsmen that they found some cash during regular inspection of vehicles and took two men, identified as Sudhir Babu and Machineedi Kanaka Suresh, into custody on Sunday evening. As per the information given by the duo, the police opened the car doors and found Rs 2.90 crore. Police suspect that the cash belongs to a YSR Congress leader who is in the poll fray.

In a separate development, excise sleuths seized 720 liquor bottles, a car and an auto-rickshaw. The excise authorities found a car carrying 440 liquor bottles between Veeravasram and Mathsyapuri. The autorickshaw was carrying 240 liquor bottles in Narasimhapuram village.

At Eluru, the election authorities seized saris worth Rs 4 lakh in two separate cases meant for distribution to the women voters at Chataparru and Balaji Nagar of Eluru rural mandal on Monday.

According to police, the officials found a lorry carrying saris worth Rs two lakhs at Chataparru village as no supporting documents were showed for their transport. In another case, the officials seized another lorry and found saris worth  
Rs two lakhs at Balaji Nagar of Venkatapuram panchayati as no bills were being carried for their transport.
