Hyderabad: A low pressure area off the north Kerala coast resulted in rains and thundershowers in the city and also across a few places in Telangana, Rayalaseema and Coastal AP.

Areas including Khairatabad, Begumpet, Marredpally, Himayatnagar etc. received brief spells of rain and recorded 1.3 mm rainfall (up to 8.30 pm). Thunderstorm activity was witnessed across the city. The Meteorological department has issued a heavy rainfall alert across the state.

“Due to the formation of the low pressure area, there is too much moisture incursion towards AP from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal leading to thunderstorm activity. The low pressure area, which is over southeast Arabian Sea off north Kerala coast, became well-marked with the associated upper air cyclonic circulation up to 5.8 km above sea level and extends up to the mid tropospheric level. It is likely to become more marked and will move north-northeastwards during the next 24 hours and will cause rain,” said M. Narsimha Rao, assistant controller, Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad.

Met officials predicted heavy rain on Friday at isolated places in the districts of Chittoor, Anantapur and Kurnool of Rayalaseema, Nellore and Prakasam of Coastal AP and Mahbubnagar, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Hyderabad, Nalgonda, Warangal and Khammam of Telangana.

Whereas on Saturday, heavy rain will occur in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari of Coastal AP and in the districts of Mahbubnagar, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Hyderabad, Nalgonda, Warangal and Khammam of Telangana.

Araku, Parvatipuram, Bobbili, Srungavarapukota, Puttur, Tirupati, Chittoor, Venkatagirikota, Srikalahasthi and Anantapur also received rain.
Met officials said that these spells of rain would bring down the maximum temperatures by three to four degrees.

“In the city, the temperatures will come down to 36ºC-37ºC for the next four or five days and may rise gradually later,” Met officials informed.

The rains continued to lash the city later in the night as well. Traffic came to a standstill at many junctions including Paradise, Tarnaka and some other areas where Metro construction works are going on. Power supply also went off at a few places in the city.
