Telugu Desam dominates Andhra Pradesh, TRS trounces Congress in Telangana

HYDERABAD: After its impressive performance in urban body elections in Seemandhra, the Telugu Desam gave a repeat performance in rural body elections, capturing a majority of ZPTC seats in the region.

In Telangana, the winner was the TRS that won in three districts with a clear majority of ZPTC seats. In the 13 districts of Seemandhra, the TD has dominated ZPTC houses in nine districts — Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Chittoor and Anantapur.

The Congress’ presence was negligible; it won two ZPTC seats in Kurnool, but did not even open its account in other districts. There are 653 ZPTC seats in Seemandhra of which the TD won 373 and the YSRC 275.

The TD also won the majority of MPTC seats — 5,216. The YSRC took 4,199 seats. There are 10,092 MPTC  seats in Seemandhra. In Telangana, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) won Adilabad, Nizamabad and Karimnagar with a clear majority.

The Congress won the majority of ZPTC seats in Nalgonda. In Mahbubnagar, Warangal and Ranga Reddy districts, though it was in the forefront, the result was a hung house in all three. Of the total 441 ZPTC seats, 191 went to the TRS, and 176 to the Congress.

In Khammam alone the Telugu Desam was in the forefront. The Congress came back strongly in the MPTC polls in Telangana. Of the total 6,480 MPTC seats in the region, the Congress got 2,351 seats and the TRS 1,860 seats. The TD bagged 1,061 seats.

The MPTC and ZPTC vote counting that began at 8 am on Monday concluded on Tuesday at 12 noon. State Election Commissioner P. Ramakanth Reddy, commenting on the ballot boxes damaged by termites in Nellore and rains in East Godavari, said that if it was not possible to take up counting, because of these incidents, then a re-poll would be held on May 18.

The SEC officials said, in some cases even a few votes could make a difference to the election outcome, so a re-election would have to be held.
