Role of senior BJP leaders to be decided collectively: Rajnath Singh
‘Reports about differences over leadership within BJP are baseless’
New Delhi: An elated Rajnath Singh on Friday gave credit to the party and persona of Narendra Modi for the spectacular performance of BJP in the elections and said role of senior party leaders including LK Advani would be decided collectively and with consensus.
"I am happy and satisfied. It is people's mandate for change and it is a mandate for Modi's popularity...Time has come to re-write Indian success story," BJP president Singh said as the BJP-led NDA is set to come to power at the Centre after defeating Congress-led UPA.
"The role of senior BJP leaders including LK Advani would be taken after meeting of the central parliamentary board," he said to repeated questions on the responsibility of leaders like Advani and Sushma Swaraj in the new government.
To a question related to reported reservations expressed by Swaraj and Advani over the leadership of Modi, Singh said the BJP is united on Modi's leadership.
"The reports about differences over leadership are baseless," he told a packed press conference.
When asked if the mandate shows end of dynastic politics, the BJP leader said this kind of victory couldn’t be achieved through "negative" agenda.
He said the BJP fought the Lok Sabha elections on the agenda of good governance and development. People have also the example of development works done by Modi as Chief Minister for 12 years in Gujarat.
He said it is for the first time after 1984 that a single party and pre-poll alliance has got a clear majority to form government at the Centre.
The BJP president said that after 1984, this is the first time that any single political party has got a clear mandate.
Thanking all for the massive mandate, Singh said, "This is a mandate for change and it is a mandate for Modi. People from all segments have voted for BJP breaking the barriers of caste, religion, creed and region. The BJP was considered an urban party but it has emerged as a party of slums, villages, poor and all sections of the society. I want to thank our SC/ST brothers."
Singh also credited Modi for holding such a large number of meetings and rallies in such a short span of time.
Referring to the theme of the campaign, Singh said, "Our agenda was for good governance and the political rivals tried to deviate the attention of the people from main issues but we stuck to our agenda and the people have voted in our favour."
On the formation of cabinet, he said, "Cabinet formation is the prerogative of the Prime Minister and we will discuss all these issues after we sit together."
Praising Advani, the BJP president said, "As far as Advaniji is concerned, he is not only our leader but we treat him as our guardian. The party was taken to the heights it has reached because of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Advani."
He also urged the party workers to show restraint and not to use any provocative language against any rival or any section of society.
Asked about the allies joining the government, "We thank our allies for their support. To run a government, you need a majority but to run a country, you need the support of everybody. We will accept support of all those who want to help us in running the country."
