‘Double game’ in Turkey after disaster
Yusuf Yerkel was pictured kicking a protester during Mr Erdogan’s visit to Manisa
Soma (Turkey): Turkey’s government which is already reeling under pressure from several protests seems hell bent on crushing any kind of rebellion without losing votes. Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government faced fresh protests on Thursday as over 238 miners died after an explosion in the mine in the town of Manisa.
Interestingly, Mr Erdogan’s administration was caught playing a double game after the deaths probably in order to retain power in the upcoming polls.
While, the PM’s aide Yusuf Yerkel was pictured kicking a protester during Mr Erdogan’s visit to Manisa, the premier himself was seen visiting the hospital to check on the survivors. Mr Erdogan’s car was attacked in Manisa on Wednesday as he tried to take stock of the situation and tried to bring it under control. He has also promised to order a probe into the deaths.
Meanwhile, anger at Turkey's government boiled over on Thursday when thousands went on strike and police clashed with protesters after at least 282 workers died in one of the worst mining accidents in modern history.
