Telangana leaders want a huge martyrs memorial

Hyderabad: June 2 will be a memorable day for most Telangana leaders as their six-year struggle will finally see the light of day. As a special tribute to Telangana Amara Veerulu, Telangana leaders and activists want the government to commemorate the day by establishing an Amara Jyoti or an eternal flame at the Gun Park, similar to that at India Gate in New Delhi.
Gun Park or the Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial was built as a tribute to the 369 students who died in the 1969 agitation. Designed by Aekka Yadagiri Rao, the memorial has nine bullet impressions to represent the then nine districts (excluding Ranga Reddy of Telangana).
“Installing an Amar Jyoti at the Gun Park is a gesture to pay respects to many students and people who laid down their lives for the cause of this separate state. This flame should not be extinguished.” said Captain L Pandu Ranga Reddy, a Telangana activist.
D.P. Reddy, president of the Telangana Development Front of India said that the government should also construct another memorial within the city limits.
“ Many big politicians do not know the history of Telangana. This is relevant because politicians often forget the sacrifices made by their countrymen,” said another activist.
