NIZAMABAD / Srinagar : Senior IPS officer K. Rajendra Kumar from Nizamabad was appointed as the new director general of police of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. Nizamabad locals, particularly friends and relatives of Mr  Kumar, expressed happiness over his elevation as DGP.

Mr Kumar was born and brought up in Nizamabad and his parents lived in Subhashnagar in the town. He had completed school education here at Sri Nuthana Vysya School (Manik Bhavan) while his Intermediate and graduation was in Vijayawada.

Before being selected for the IPS, he worked as a lecturer here at Women’s Degree College. Mr Kumar replaced Mr Ashok Prasad who has been appointed as the special director of the IB with immediate effect.

A 1984 batch IPS officer, Mr Kumar’s appointment was cleared at a Cabinet meeting chaired by J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday.

Before this, Mr Kumar has held several positions like SSP Srinagar, IGP Jammu, IGP Kashmir and IGP CID and was special director general of police (Coordination), Police Headquarters. prior to the DGP appointment. He has also served as interim DGP of the state for a short duration in 2012.

Shettipally Venkateshwer Rao, a classmate of Mr Kumar said that Mr Kumar had been attacked twice in Jammu & Kashmir and was admitted in a private corporate hospital in Hyderabad earlier.
