India's Attorney General and Solicitor General resigns
Govt is considering senior lawyers Mukul Rohtagi and Ranjit Kumar for the position
New Delhi: With the Narendra Modi government taking charge top law officers in the country, including Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati and Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran, have tendered their resignations. It is learnt that the government is considering the names of senior lawyers Mukul Rohtagi and Ranjit Kumar for the position of Attorney General and Solicitor General respectively.
Sources stated that since the tenure of law officers is co-terminus with that of the government, they tendered their resignations according to convention. It is learnt that the government would appoint new set of law officers.
Mr Rohtagi was one of the additional solicitor generals during the A.B. Vajpayee-led NDA at the Centre. Mr Rohtagi has been handling several important cases defending the BJP and government, including the Babri Masjid demolition case in the Supreme Court.
Rohtagi, who defended politicians, including Jayalalithaa in corruption cases, has also defended the Gujarat government.
