2014 to be high El Nino year
El Nino and La Nina are still major challenges to forecast
Hyderabad:With the sudden increase in temperatures across the globe, William B. Gail, chief technology officer of Global Weather and the president of the American Meteorological Society said that 2014 will be a “very high El Nino” year. “El Nino and La Nina are still major challenges to forecast. We still have a long way to go. As per our observations, the El Nino this year will be high all over. We have to keep experimenting and try to use the available engineering to find out how these things could be forecast,” he said.
Speaking to a gathering of over 50 people at Saptaparni, as part of Manthan Forum For Public Disclosure, organised by the US Consulate, Mr Gail elaborated on the importance of bringing together public and private partnerships for creating a strong database on weather predictions. “The government meteorological centres should start outsourcing work to private participants who will make the whole idea of delivering weather to people hassle-free and efficient by incorporating the latest technology.”
Mentioning that the existing prediction mechanisms can go upto seven days accurately, he said, “There is the climatology model that will give an average value of the temperatures or rainfall depending on the values recorded last year.” He also said that there must be more courses and inclusion of meteorological studies in schools and universities.
