Bindra and Vijay in, Sodhi out
Shooters were chosen on the basis of their scores in the recent ISSF Shotgun World Cup
Hyderabad: Ace shooters Abhinav Bindra and Vijay Kumar will lead the Indian challenge at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July-August, while out-of-form Ronjan Sodhi missed the cut in the 30-member squad that was announced here on Saturday.
The National Rifle Association of India’s selection committee picked the shotgun team that includes 10 shooters competing over six events. The rifle/pistol team for the event, to be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 3, was named last month.
ISSF World Cup winner Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Heena Sidhu and London Olympics bronze medallist Gagan Narang are the other prominent names.
The shooters were chosen on the basis of their scores in the recent ISSF Shotgun World Cup.
“The pair events have been deleted from the 2014 Commonwealth Games and this has brought down the number of medal events in the Games this year, compared to 2010,” the federation said.
“Moreover, the two pistol events, centre fire and standard events, have also been deleted and instead women’s double trap and skeet events have been added on the 2014 programme.”
In the last Games at home, India clinched 14 gold, 11 silver and five bronze medals.
