Seoul: Samsung Electronics Co says it will begin selling a smartphone using its Tizen operating system in the third quarter of this year.

The announcement on Monday showed Samsung's ambition to reduce its dependence on Google's Android operating system. Samsung said in a statement that the smartphone called Samsung Z will go on sale in Russia first.

It said there are plans to sell the phone in other countries. The company said the smartphone phone will be shown at a Tizen developer conference in San Francisco this week.
