Egmore Court summons Jayalalithaa in Income Tax case
IT dept had alleged that Jaya had committed punishable offences under IT Act, 1961
CHENNAI: The additional chief metropolitan magistrate (economic offences), Egmore, has directed CM J. Jayalalithaa and her close aide Sasikala to appear before the court on June 9 in connection with a case filed against them by the IT dept. The department had filed a case against Ms Jayalalithaa and Ms Sasikala, partners in the erstwhile Sasi Enterprises, for their failure to file returns for 1991-92 and 1992-93. The IT dept had alleged that they had committed offences punishable under provision of the Income Tax Act, 1961. When the case came up for hearing, the special public prosecutor requested the court to fix a date within a week for framing of charges and to question the duo. “The petition filed by the special public prosecutor is allowed in view of the orders passed by the SC. Under the circumstances, this case is posted to June 9 for their appearance and for questioning and for framing charges without fail,” said R Dakshinamurthy, the additional chief metropolitan magistrate.
