Congress to be opposition in Lok Sabha
The newly elected speaker would take final decision on selecting the principal opposition
New Delhi: The Congress, which ended up the second largest party with just 44 states, is likely to be offered the status of principal Opposition party in Lok Sabha.
Clear indications show that the ruling NDA dispensation has taken a call on this tricky issue with the national party not even winning 10 per cent of the total seats.
Highly-placed government sources also said the NDA would offer the post of deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha to the Opposition as per the convention, but clarified that no decision has been taken whether the offer would go to Congress or a political grouping.
Sources said the decision on which party would serve as the principal Opposition in Lok Sabha would be taken by the newly elected Speaker but gave enough indications that the position would go to the Congress, which is technically the second largest party.
