Chennai/Kabul: Afghanistan security forces have arrested a man for suspected involvement in the abduction of Father Alexis Prem Kumar Antonysamy, 47, from Dindigul. Police sources said Father Kumar had been located in Gilan district of Herat, which has given great hope to his family in Tamil Nadu.

Afghan officials said the Indian government was in constant touch with the Kabul government and the local authorities.

Father Kumar, Afghan head of Jesuit Refugee Service, was kidnapped Monday by unidentified armed men, believed to be linked to the Taliban, while he was visiting a JRS-supported school for Afghan refugee children from Iran and Pakistan.

He was kidnapped from the school as he was about to return to Herat.

JRS, which has been working in Afghanistan since 2008, has suspended its Afghan operations after the abduction.
Meanwhile, the US officials said on Wednesday that they are in touch with both Indian and Afghan authorities on the abduction of Father Kumar.
