Kochi: Till a few months back, Jewel Mary, the bubbly girl from Tripunithura, Kochi, was known to a few as a Master of Ceremonies (MC) for corporate and other events.

Soon, she became the blue-eyed girl of television as she captivated  audiences with her vivacity while co-hosting the popular reality show D 4 Dance on Mazhavil Manorama, along  with Govind Padmasurya.

“I have been hosting shows as a part-time job during my student days. Majority of them were corporate events. The D 4 Dance opportunity came, as I was waiting to fly abroad for my job. I just wanted to give it a try,” says Jewel, a nursing graduate.

Jewel was on cloud nine with the appreciation she has been receiving for the show. She was apprehensive about the crowd response before telecast. “D 4 Dance is a different reality show, where everything is spontaneous. We have to be vigilant and of course, do some dramatics to grab the audiences’ attention. I was worried how audience would react to this new trend that has no boundaries between contestants, judges and anchors.

Luckily, people accepted it. We are like family here and it is quite enjoyable to be with the tiny tots. The way they dance amazes even us. When I go out now, people recognize me. That makes me happy,” she adds.

For Jewel, anchoring has been part of her life. “During my school days, I used to write and perform in the ballets. That helped me get rid of my stage fear and paved the way for me to be an MC. But being an MC is not an easy job. I’d say being it is tougher than that of a television anchor. In television, you can have different takes or can make necessary changes on the editing table. But that isn’t possible in a live performance. One has to fully submit oneself to the occasion to balance a crowd,” she adds.

For now, Jewel has no plans to quit her job. With some offers in the pipeline, she will try the promising ones. However, her dream is to become a writer.

“I will write a book, although I haven’t decided about its subject. I think I will get the thread in time,” concludes Jewel, a hardcore fan of Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho.
